2PM accounts for 79.91% of JYP Entertainment's profits in first half of 2013

After JYP Entertainment's US branch suffered a heavy blow, the company ended up in the red for the past fiscal year.

According to Korea's Financial Supervisory Service, in the beginning of the year, JYP Entertainment earned 9,900,000,000 KRW (approximately $8,890,000 USD) in sales, and 2,000,000,000 KRW (approximately $1,796,000 USD) in net profit. However, taking last year into account, the company had a net loss of 400,000,000 KRW (approximately $359,200 USD). The loss came from JYP's United States branch JYP Entertainment Corporation, where JYP holds 90% of the stocks.

Because of this, the JYP Entertainment stock on the KOSDAQ fell 6% to 16,620 KRW (approximately $15 USD). JYP Entertainment still has some risk because of the fact that 2PM makes up most of JYP Entertainment's profits. 2PM was responsible for 61.63% of JYP Entertainment profits in 2011, which rose to 72.42% in 2012. So far in 2013, it rose to an even higher 79.91%.

J.Tune, Starship, & WM Entertainment mentioned as some of the possible candidates for next merger with SM C&C

Ever since the merger between Woollim Entertainment and SM C&C, music fans have been eager to learn whether any more mergers may be coming about, and the simple answer is probably yes.

This shouldn't be a surprise as with the previous merger, SM Entertainment, the biggest shareholder of subsidiary SM C&C, clearly revealed their hopes of becoming a leading global music group like that of Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, and Warner Music Group.

In order to reach such a level, SM will need to bring in several agencies under them to become a major label or a group like the aforementioned three.

One previous report mentioned that insiders in the music industry claimed, "With Woollim as a start, there is a rumor that several companies will be going under the SM label. There are several that are already being discussed. Although many agencies are venturing into the overseas market riding on Hallyu, it's hard for them to catch up to the know-hows and network of SM, who has built up a long history... Making good music and producing singers is a separate issue from marketing them. If they are able to distribute these responsibilities through label mergers, then it is a win-win situation for everyone."

Regarding all this, a SM C&C rep did not deny it, but also didn't give specific details as he said, "As we have started a label business, we will be pursuing more label-joinings with various companies. There is a possibility open with various companies. Through this project, we look forward to an effect of simultaneous growth between SM Ent and various labels."

Since this article, a more recent one has surfaced, naming three companies in particular among the mid-tier agencies that are currently being discussed for a merger: J.Tune Camp (representative artist: MBLAQ), Starship Entertainment (representative artist: SISTAR), and WM Entertainment (representative artist: B1A4).

A rep from one of these companies is said to have cautiously responded, "It is true that we have discussed with SM before, but nothing has been decided upon."

The article mentions that it seems like these companies are waiting to see how it works out for INFINITE, TASTY, and NELL under Woollim. If SM can help INFINITE's new world tour see much success, it's expected that the next merger for SM may happen soon.

How do you feel about all this? Is there a specific company you'd want to see join in?

Weekly K-Pop Music Chart 2013 – August Week 4

Weekly K-Pop Music Chart 2013 – August Week 4

For the 8th straight week, we have a new No. 1 song. This time it belongs to EXO’s “Growl.”  This song moves up seven places to take over the top spot and becomes EXO’s first ever No. 1 song on our chart.  “Growl” has swept nearly all music shows in Korea in the last two weeks and is also ranked high on independent charts, so it is not surprising to see this song being No. 1 on our chart. Despite debuting just over a year ago, EXO’s popularity is skyrocketing. It is not hard to imagine that they are following the successful footsteps of other SM Entertainment male groups like H.O.T, Shinhwa, TVXQ, Super Junior, and SHINee to become household names in K-Pop. Congratulations to EXO.
If “Growl” is to become the first song this summer to spend more than a week on top of our chart, it will have to get past 2NE1’s latest hit “Do You Love Me” which makes an impressive debut at No. 2 this week, just 17 points fewer than “Growl.” As mentioned, 2NE1 will release a new song each month in the second half of 2013. “Do You Love Me” replaces “Falling In Love” which was their single of July. Written and produced by Teddy, DEE.P, and Lydia Paek, this dance track is expected to be the next summer hit after “I’m the Best.” The music video shows the girls partying up in Seoul and Jeju Island.
The only other new song in the top 10 this week is Lim Jung Hee’s “Luv Is,” moving up 13 spots to No. 10. In this song, Lim Jung Hee joins hands with rap duo, Baechigi. It is a pop R&B number with hip-hop rhythms.  The singer’s vocals flow well with Baechigi’s.

SM Entertainment’s Next Group to Follow INFINITE

INFINITE was just the beginning.

There have been rumors of SM Entertainment merging with other companies to follow their merger with INFINITE's agency Woollim Entertainment. Those other companies might be small agencies that have top singers, but everything is still up in the air. However, because in its merger with Woollim SM Entertainment made an official announcement of its new Woollim label, there has been talk that it will inevitably announce other new labels as well.
SM ensured that they would try to maintain the characteristic of the label they are merging with. If anything, that's the core of the merger itself. There is determination to keep the color of the new label, so as to expand the music diversity in the company instead of creating one big music style. And so they decided to keep some of the existing workforce, bringing about 20 staff members from Woollim to SM.

A SM C&C rep said, "Although it is considered a merger in terms of marketing, we plan to keep everything else the same, in terms of workforce and business strategies."
More than INFINITE, fans are curious to see how Nell will do in SM. As a large idol group agency, it is expected that SM will take an active role in INFINITE's marketing and collaboration, but there's no saying how SM and Nell will be working together. Nell and INFINITE, as well as other Woollim artists will be participating in SM Town's next World Tour.
Regarding its new Woollim Label, SM Entertainment said, "Just as Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, and other global major music companies nurture a diversity of artists with different personalities, we plan to become a major music company that represents Asia, and that's why we announced a new label in our company."

Yang Hyun Suk explains the delay for the Girls' Generation type girl group he planned to debut

YG Entertainment's Yang Hyun Suk recently spoke up about the delay for the girl group he had planned to debut.

He attended the premiere showcase for Mnet's 'WHO IS NEXT:WIN' where he explained the reasoning behind the delay. "In all honesty, I wanted to create a group like Girls' Generation. It's not an area where I'm an expert in but I wanted to create a group of pretty girls who could sing well. I don't know if it's because of a tendency I have, but I focus more on talent over looks. Even if someone is so beautiful, if they don't have the talent that I want, it won't work."

He continued, "I was also quite jealous of Girls' Generation. I thought...what if a bunch of pretty girls do hip hop? When I look at Wonder Girls I always thought it would be fun if they sang YG style songs. However, as time passed, my plans started to fall apart. I originally chose the girls because they had cute faces, but since they fell short on the talent I had required, it went from dozens of girls to only 6 left. Even at this point, I still don't think I can be 100% satisfied. I'm not sure if the group will consist of 5 members or 3."

Yang Hyun Suk also said that he may debut a boy group first, "I'm going to think more carefully about the girl group. I'm thinking of debuting a boy group first. If it's a girl group, it will be this year. At the latest, I plan on introducing them in the beginning of next year."

Meanwhile, 'WIN' is a survival program about 11 YG trainees who have been trainees for several years. The trainees will be divided into two teams--Team A and Team B. The winning team who will acquire the title 'WINNER' will then debut as a group.

'Our Neighborhood Arts and Physical Education' to air on Japanese TV, could it be the Changmin effect?

Within just 4 months since it first aired, KBS 2TV's top-rated variety show 'Our Neighborhood Arts and Physical Education' will air on Japanese television!

Only the most popular Korea variety shows that have been running for a year or more, such as 'Running Man', 'We Got Married', and 'K-Pop Star', get picked up by Japanese broadcasters for syndication, but 'Our Neighborhood Arts and Physical Education' defied odds by being picked up early on. Many are guessing that it's probably due to the overseas popularity of TVXQ's Changmin.

A broadcast insider stated, "Ever since the early stage of 'Our Neighborhood Arts and Physical Education', various Japanese broadcast stations have been sending their offers. Recently, satellite TV's 'DigiKore' offered a hefty price, signing the deal to export the show. It seems MC TVXQ's Changmin had an effect on this deal."

Fans in Japan will be able to enjoy 24-episodes of 'Our Neighborhood Arts and Physical Education' on their small screen soon.

SS501 Rapper Kim Hyun Joong Regrets Not Using His 'Boys Over Flowers' Fame To Get 'Introduced To Better Women'

Actor Kim Hyun Joong has one major regret from his days starring in the popular South Korean drama "Boys Over Flowers" back in 2009: he didn't use his celebrity at the time to meet women.
In an interview Thursday on the Korean Broadcasting System television program "Happy Together," Kim, who raps for the boy band SS501, described how at the height of the popularity of "Boys Over Flowers" he had trouble comprehending just how big the show had become.
"At the time, it was such a busy time and our interaction with the public was limited, so I didn't really feel any different," Kim said.

"I feel the popularity now, however. I now realize how popular the show was."
His disconnection from the hype the show was earning, led Kim to what he believes was his main mistake from that time of his life.
"I regret not enjoying it at the time," he said. "I could've been introduced to better women."
Kim's performance in "Boys Over Flowers" earned him both the "Best Actor Award" at the 2009 Seoul International Drama Awards  and the "Popularity Award" at the 45th Annual PaekSang Arts Awards.
Kim left SS501's record label DSP Media in 2010, and began his career as a solo artist, yet he is still a member of the group.
Earlier this month, the star, whose third solo EP "Round 3" was released on July 22, appeared on the Seoul Broadcasting System TV variety show "Barefoot Friends."
His "hat dance" earned Kim major praise from the panel of celebrity judges including alternative hip hop groups Epik High and Dynamic Duo and production team Duble Sidekick.
The judges also praised the SS501 member's rapping.

EXO Addresses Their Fans: 'If You Really Love Us, Refrain From Invading Our Private Lives'

EXO addresses their overzealous fans
EXO has been in the news a lot lately, but not just because of their music.
The twelve-member Korean-Chinese boy group may have only debuted last year, but they have already generated an enormous fanbase.
That is not news it itself, but the extreme behavior portrayed by some of these fans certainly is.

EXO has found themselves in the midst of a war, so to speak. The members have had their personal lives invaded and even their physical safety put in jeopardy due to the great lengths some of these fans go to in order to get close to the idols.
In an interview on August 13 EXO shared their frustrations over the situation and pleaded with these fans.
"Our personalities have even changed because of our victim mentality," explained a disheartened D.O, a sentiment shared by his group mates.
These overzealous fans, known as 'sasaeng fans' in Korean (meaning 'private life fans' - essentially stalkers), have been known to destroy property, hire special drivers to help them follow the group members around, sneak into bathrooms or other private locations, and cause an air of mayhem where ever they go.
Because of the extremely dangerous behavior exhibited by these fans, EXO has had to change or delay their travel plans and promotional activities, increase their security, and in general, fear for their own safety and well-being.
With no real end to this madness in sight, Suho addressed the group's fans.
"We would appreciate your support at concerts and official events. Although we are grateful for your never ending support, we also have our own personal lives," he said.
"If you all really love us, we hope that you will understand and refrain from invading our private lives."

The theater is the best place to hang out in the summer, even for celebrities. Besides appearing for VIP premieres, stars also like to attend the movies in casual clothing with other people.
However, the stars' recent movie outings have become a breeding ground for dating rumors. Lee Hyun Woo and IU went to the movie as friends but became the center of attention as a suspected couple, and Nine Muses Kyungri had a scandal with SHINee's Jonghyun. These stars went to the movie theaters and were photographed by fans. These photos then made their way to the online community and sparked dating rumors.

On August 9 a photo titled 'Lee Hyun Woo and IU's movie date' was uploaded onto the online community and various social networking sites. In the photo a man and a man thought to be Lee Hyun Woo and IU are wearing hats and waiting for the elevator.  Witnesses claimed that the two people pictured were in fact Lee Hyun Woo and IU, and said they looked very friendly with each other.
Although the comment started off with 'they looked friendly with each other,' not 'they are dating,' this photo soon became the reason for their dating rumor. Regarding this matter, both parties said, 'IU and Lee Hyun Woo became friends while working as MCs together on SBS 'Inkigayo.' Even after IU left they have been contacting each other and are still friends. They decided to watch a movie together after their schedules because the timing was right. Although they met while working, the two are platonic friends and not dating each other.'
The same could be said for Jonghyun and Kyungri's dating rumor. A photo showed up on an online community site claiming the two were spotted on a date watching a movie together. On August 11 Jonghyun tried to explain the situation on his Twitter, saying, 'People are talking about me on online community forums a lot. Just to tell you the facts, I went to go watch a movie with my friends, and they are not celebrities. I hope because of this my friends don't go through trouble or any other inconveniences.'
He continued, 'I only found out because my friend sent me the photo. I'm happy there are so many people who care for me. It's late, everyone should go to sleep now. I'm sorry for making you worry. Even though it's nothing that I have to apologize for, I'm sorry,' expressing his uncomfortable state of mind due to the sudden unwanted attention.
All of these stars have stated that they've watched movies with each other because they are friends and not because they're dating. Even in the photos they look like friends, and not lovers. If they really were dating, it's more likely that they would have disguised themselves so that no one would recognize them instead of going out in plain attire.
Even netizens are responding in a cool manner. They have said things like, 'Can't celebrities go to the movies, too?' and 'I feel bad for the idols that can't even go to the theaters when they want to.' They are showing support for these idols, believing that they truly are just close friends and not actually dating.
Even if in the future it turns out these celebrities were actually on a date, for now it's enough to believe the stars when they say they're just close friends. After all, don't stars deserve to spend the night out at the movies like any other normal person?

Ryeowook responds to negative comments about him on 'Super Junior's Kiss the Radio'

Ryeowook responded to negative comments against him on 'Super Junior's Kiss the Radio'.

The members of EXO were guests on the August 13 airing of the radio show. Ryeowook is currently the DJ of the show and he sang a duet with EXO's D.O. The song they sang was none other than Fly to the Sky's famous "Missing You", and both boys covered the song beautifully. Their voices complemented each other's perfectly.

However, apparently, some listeners didn't think so. Ryeowook's phone for the show started to get bombarded with live texts which demanded that Ryeowook stop singing. Some stated that D.O was infinitely better than he was, and that D.O shouldn't sing with Ryeowook again.

Ryeowook took to his Twitter to respond where he tweeted, "It was a really shocking 2 hours. It's true that when a sunbae and a hoobae sing together, it's burdensome for both. I know he's very well loved, and I hope he gets acknowledged as a singer more than anyone else ^^ It's a road even I'm worried about, even though I've debuted 8 years ago. Looking forward to tomorrow and stopping my rant, ke. I did good (thumbs up)".

After reading Ryeowook's tweet, both E.L.F and EXO fans were saddened on what happened on the radio program. EXO fans commented, "D.O and Ryeowook are really good friends. Please don't make their relationship uncomfortable", "Both D.O and Ryeowook have beautiful voices.. Don't pay attention to the small few who don't think so", and "Most EXO fans are not like this. Please cheer up".

20 Fascinating Facts You Might Not Know About Your Favorite K-pop Idols

This may sound daring, but I'll go ahead and assume that a lot of us aren't personally acquainted with some of our favorite K-pop idols (even though you know, as well as I, that we'd be the best, best friends they ever had - like, ever).

And because these idols are carefully filtered through all that airbrushed makeup and flawless performances, we so readily accept their otherworldliness, which is exactly what's expected of us - our idolatry.

But here are 20 facts (weird, gross, random, tragic - they're all in there) you may or may not have known that take away from some of their perfection.

1. Nichkhun was originally in talks to appear on 'We Got Married' as Brown Eyed Girls' Ga In's lawfully wedded (on-air) husband, but  was replaced last minute by 2AM's Jo Kwon

2. Suzy auditioned for the 2009 Mnet's Superstar K, but she only made it through the preliminary round before she was eliminated. Luckily, a talent agent took notice of her and scouted her. And, as fate would have it, she became a trainee at JYP Entertainment and debuted as the youngest member of miss A

3. EXO's Luhan was given the nickname Marilyn Monroe because Marilyn Monroe's Chinese name 玛丽莲·梦露 (Mali lian Meng lu), the character "meng" sounds similar to the word that means "cute/moe", and "lu" is derived from "LUhan".

4. After School's Nana is a licensed beautician and also has a membership at the Makeup Artists Association.

5. Back in the day, it wasn't always the case that Rain was as explosive a star (in more ways than one) as he is today. J.Y. Park revealed that Rain failed 18 auditions before he was finally granted admission to train under JYP Entertainment.

6. Brown Eyed Girls' Ga In was handpicked by the other three members after she was eliminated from 'Battle Shinhwa'. According to Ga In, as she was crying in the bathroom after falling short of the cut, she was found by composer Ahn Jung Hoon. As it turns out, her elimination was the best thing that happened to her, for she was chosen through that audition to be part of the Brown Eyed Girls.

7. MBLAQ's Mir confessed that he didn't have to audition to get into MBLAQ because J.Tune Camp's CEO is his brother-in-law.

Honorable mention: Mir secretly sold his father's cow to be able to pay for a date. He dragged a calf to the cow market and told the salespeople that he was running errands for his father.

8. SISTAR's Bora revealed that on the day she made her television debut through a program called 'Golden Ladder' as Myeong Ji University's beauty queen, her father, who had been suffering from stomach cancer, tragically passed away on the same day.

9. In elementary school, Taecyeon proposed to his first love with two rings. One ring was silver and the other was gold. The gold one just so happened to be his mother's wedding ring (what a guy).

10. Hana's mother worked as a singer in the 1980s and her father worked as a presidential bodyguard.

11. In elementary school, B2ST's Yoseob's parents were called to school when he exposed that his teacher was really wearing a wig.

12. Girl's Day's Yura revealed that she has insurance on her legs valued at $500,000. Her company, DreamT Entertainment, stated, "Yura's legs are really long and don't have a single wound. Because she's a dancer, she signed up for insurance in case of an emergency."

13. Big Bang's T.O.P revealed that the original stage name Yang Hyun Suk had in mind for him was Mark.

14. Lizzy was once asked out by a boy during her second period class. He broke up with her before the bell rang at the end of the day.

15. B.A.P's Bang Yong Guk has an older sister and an older twin brother.

16. 2NE1's Park Bom once offered Teddy a deer's belly button candy because he looked exhausted. (Brownie points go out to whoever can explain what a deer's belly button candy is and what kind of health benefits it provides).

17. SHINee's Jonghyun once referred to an SUV as a USB. I kid you not, friends. Minho revealed this lovely piece of information on a radio show.

18. Hyosung's father had been diagnosed with lung cancer, but had recovered after treatment. When he decided to go back to work to support his family, the cancer came back and took a toll on his body. He died of lung cancer in 2008.

19. Junho broke 28 pairs of chopsticks... with his butt.

20. Girls' Generation's Sunny shares the same birthday (May 15) as her two older sisters.

Honorable mention: During the filming of 2PM's debut MV, "10 Points Out of Ten", the crew stopped filming because of a horrible smell. It turned out to be Chansung's fart.

Do you guys have any engrossing facts we may not have known about your favorite idols?
